With Internet Control it is possible to have an instrument located in one place and the technician controlling and analysing collected data in another location:

The FTP Server acts as a go-between, from local computer to remote computer (controlling instrument), this has the advantage of allowing the local and remote computers to access the FTP server through dial up networking (Mobile telephone), connect for the time needed then disconnect and to backup collected data offsite.

Watchdog timers are present on the remote computer (both software & hardware), these ensure should either the computer, instrument or phone connection go down because of a crash, then restoration with out the need for a technician to be dispatched.

At automated scheduled intervals the remote computer connects to the FTP server to receive new commands and backup collected test data. The local computer is able to connect on demand to view collected data and specify new sequences:
