Our new method
A very simple technique has been developed at ACM for improving noisy
cells.
The Experiment: WE is 1 cm² of Ti
AE is 2cm² of Pt
and RE is SCE
via a lugin probe and electrolyte bridge. The electrolyte is 1L of water with
a gram of NaCl. AC Impedance from 30Khz to 0.01Hz with a perturbing amplitude of
10mV. The results are shown in green below. Massive scatter is observed due to
a very low signal to noise ratio.
Coupling a further Pt electrode to the RE via a 1µF capacitor produces no
shift in rest potential and results in the smooth red curve below. The
second Pt electrode appears to offer a common mode path for the induced noise. ACM
Instruments manufacture and sell this fourth electrode in a convenient ready made form.
